At the Flat, a music venue and upscale, neighborhood lounge, cocktails are king - and a lot of extra thought has been put into creating a fun and unique drink menu.
Manager Nikki Horn has applied the same artistic standard the Flat has incorporated in its décor to crafting the list of cocktails - and her creativity shines through all of the tasty drink types. She said that in addition to the Flat's regular cocktail menu, the bar serves up specials all through the week.
On Mondays, The Flat features an all-day happy hour, which means $2 Lone Stars, $3 select bottle beers, $5 wine, $4 piña colada and sangria and $4 for their popular frozen mojitos. "The frozen mojito is the best-selling drink of the Flat," Horn said. "It's the perfect cool, cocktail for a warm Houston day, full of refreshing mint and lime."
On Tuesdays, the Flat is all about Texas. The bar celebrates "drinking local" by highlighting state-made drinks with special prices. Lone Stars are only $2 and a variety of drinks made with Texas liquors--including the Hill Country Mule, Lone Star Old-Fashioned, Home Sweet Home and the Texas Street -- are featured on the menu for $7.
Wednesdays are Reggae Day at the venue - and the drinks are inspired by Jamaica. Guests enjoy the Jamaican 10-speed, a mix of Midori, vodka, evaporated milk and coconut, the Dreadlock, a combination of Absolute, Rum, peach schnapps, orange and cranberry juice, and Down By the Beach, shaking up Appleton with pineapple juice, ginger beer and bitters.
Martini Thursdays are a popular night at the Flat. A couple of guest favorites include the Cotton Candy, Coconut and Moonshine Martinis. "Our classic martini - served with Dripping Springs vodka - is always a crowd-pleaser," Horn said.
Saturday nights are all about shot specials. The list includes Kamikazes, Woo Woo and Tropical Paradise. During Sunday Brunch, the bar serves up its signature Bloody Marys and Micheladas, as well as three types of mimosas, strawberry pineapple, peach and orange, and St. Germain and orange.
Jasmine Richardson, general manager, said that she and Horn share an eclectic palette, which is reflected in the drink menu. "We really try to give our clientele an opportunity to taste different liquors -- with a heavy influence on rum," Richardson said. "We want to come up with cocktails that are more unusual, that you don't see done all the time. Nikki and I put in quite a bit of research, and we experiment on a regular basis to come up with the drinks."
She explained that the influence on rum is based on managing partner DJ Sun, whose off-stage name is Andre Sam-Sin. DJ Sun was raised in Suriname in South America. "There are not a lot of places that use rum like we do," Richardson said. "There is a little bit of tiki influence - but we have more of a contemporary take. There are a lot of high end rums that are worth trying - and several are good enough to sip like a fine whiskey."
